Flighty Product Teardown
Independent product analysis & feature concept
Product Strategy & UX Design
Team: Independent project
Completed: August 2026
Project Length: 4 days
Tools: Figma, Loveable ai & Gemini
Project Brief: Conducted an end-to-end product teardown of Flighty app to understand its users, core experience, and product psychology; identify a meaningful opportunity for improvement; and develop a feature recommendation grounded in user needs, business considerations, and product strategy.
-
Flighty excels at proactively telling travelers what is happening with their flight, but the departure experience remains fragmented. Travelers still need to leave Flighty to answer important questions about airport security, check-in, and boarding. The challenge was identifying how Flighty could close this gap without expanding so far that it lost focus on its core strength: flight intelligence.
-
Product Analysis
I evaluated Flighty’s core value proposition, primary users, end-to-end journey, and product psychology to understand where the product creates the most value and why users return. That analysis identified proactive, timely information as the core of the Flighty experience, particularly the moment when Flighty tells a traveler something important before they would otherwise know it.Opportunity Identification
Mapping the traveler journey revealed a gap during departure. While Flighty centralizes most flight information, travelers still need outside sources for security conditions, airline check-in, and boarding passes. I focused the opportunity on reducing this fragmentation while staying aligned with Flighty’s existing product purpose.Concept Development
I translated the opportunity into the Flighty Departure Hub, combining security intelligence with check-in and boarding tools. I designed the concept within Flighty’s existing experience and then considered how it could be validated, measured, and introduced without compromising user trust or expanding beyond Flighty’s core focus. -
Flighty Departure Hub brings key airport departure information into the existing Flighty experience. The concept combines live and predicted security wait times with check-in and boarding tools, including direct airline check-in links and boarding-pass access where supported. Proactive alerts would surface unusually long security waits so travelers can adjust their arrival plans before reaching the airport.
Departure Hub
Extending Flighty’s proactive experience through airport departure
I designed the Departure Hub to bring the most important pieces of the airport departure experience into Flighty without changing what makes the product valuable. The concept integrates security conditions, check-in, and boarding information directly into the existing flight experience, reducing the need to switch between multiple apps and sources.
Security Intelligence
Live and predicted security wait times help travelers make more informed decisions about when to arrive at the airport, with proactive alerts when conditions change.Check-In & Boarding
Airline check-in links and boarding-pass access keep essential departure tasks close to the flight information travelers are already monitoring.Designed for Flighty
Rather than creating a separate travel-planning experience, the Departure Hub extends Flighty’s existing strength: surfacing timely, actionable information when travelers need it most.
Deliverables
Feedback & Reflection
Validation Strategy
Because the Departure Hub was developed as a product concept, the next step would be validating both the underlying user need and the proposed experience. I would begin with traveler interviews to understand how users currently make airport arrival decisions and manage security, check-in, and boarding. I would then test the prototype to evaluate whether the information is useful and timely, whether security estimates are trusted, and whether the feature is intuitive within the existing Flighty experience.
If validated, I would pilot the feature at a small number of airports with reliable data sources, measuring usage and data quality before expanding availability.
Hypothesis
Reducing departure uncertainty and app-switching will increase travelers’ reliance on Flighty throughout the departure journey.
Primary Success Metric
Departure Hub Usage Rate - the percentage of eligible trips where a traveler engages with at least one Departure Hub feature before boarding.
Reflection
This project challenged me to look beyond individual interface improvements and think about how a new feature fits within an existing product strategy. The strongest opportunity wasn't simply adding more travel functionality, but extending what Flighty already does well: reducing uncertainty through proactive, timely information. It also reinforced the importance of considering trust, technical feasibility, and product focus alongside the user experience.
